TEDxSonomaCounty Event: Blake & Virginia Miremont

TEDxSonomaCounty had its 2021 Crossroads event on January 30th at the Jackson Theater at Sonoma Country Day School. This event digs into the crossroads we all experience and what opportunities and possibilities it has on our human and societal experience. Speakers were invited to share their thought-provoking ideas that help reframe our vision of what is possible. Blake and Virginia Miremont from Architectural Plastics, Inc. were among the speakers.

Based in Petaluma, California, Architectural Plastics is a company specializing in custom products for a wide range of clients. They produce museum cases, retail displays, machinery components, and art installations as well as biomedical instruments, and acrylic furniture.

This design and fabrication company was founded in 1977 by Blake’s father, Pierre Miremont. As Blake transitioned into leading the company in 2016, he saw an opportunity to modernize the operation by renovating the facility and training a new workforce. Both Blake and Virginia have worked on creating new processes for all their manufacturing.

Architectural Plastics has emerged as a leader in the industry and a trailblazer during the COVID pandemic. They quickly shifted their business model to play a key role in the production of personal protection equipment. This transition saved the company and kept its employees working. Blake saw an opportunity to be part of the solution during the pandemic and the business has flourished. They are now expanding their line of PPE to include protective barriers for offices and businesses.

Blake and Virginia are creative leaders in their business and stand proud to help the world with their innovation and service. Read the original media release here.

Architectural Plastics, Inc. has always been a leader in plastic design, fabrication, and sheet distribution but has now turned its attention to see through, sneeze guard shields for COVID-19.

Blake Miremont, CEO of API, recognized the need early on and pivoted his operation to be part of the solution during the pandemic. Most companies in Sonoma County were deemed non-essential and shut down, but those that were still operational urgently needed sneeze guards. Blake began ordering thousands of sheets of acrylic to ramp up production and supply the market.

When Sonoma County reopened its economy, the demand skyrocketed. While API usually goes through 500 sheets in a year, Blake has almost 2,000 sheets in-house and on order to meet the increased production. They have never seen this much material in their 16,000 square foot factory over their 40 years of operation.

Blake and his team are excited to be producing face shields that act as a barrier to droplet virus infections for companies. While this has given them lots of attention, they are much more than just a manufacturer of protective sneeze guards.

Architectural Plastics produces high-end acrylic furniture and display cases for large clients in the Northern California area, as well as throughout the United States, including museums, airports, and wine cellars. Their expertise in fabrication positioned them to quickly design and manufacture these face shields. They have also gone on to produce acrylic barriers between workers and open-air spaces for restaurants, offices, and numerous government agencies. Because they bought up all the acrylic sheets in California, they are also selling full sheets to buyers.

This is a shining example of a family business that saw a need and filled it. They are truly a company with a call-to-service during this pandemic. Read the original media release here.

When COVID-19 hit in 2020, many businesses had to close to help stop the spread of the virus. Kathleen Boniface, a Portland skincare studio owner who has been an aesthetician for over 20 years, felt the effects of the shutdowns when she closed her shop in early March. She knew there had to be a way to use personal protective equipment in her business and her goal was to provide a safe method of working with clients without the interference of a mask.

Kathleen looked to create some kind of a barrier between her guests and the aesthetician and after researching and exploring options, she reached out to Architectural Plastics for help.

New Innovative Design

Architectural Plastics, Inc. Creative Director and CEO, Blake Miremont, and his team partnered with Kathleen to create the “Boniface Aerosol Barrier.” This patent-pending design acts as a protective see-through, acrylic barrier shaped in a triangular pyramid. It allows aestheticians better access to their patients while still providing protection to both.

Kathleen worked with Architectural Plastics for several months, testing different prototypes and came up with its final product. It fits together perfectly while being easy to take apart for cleaning. Kathleen hopes her design will become a new standard in the industry and has been endorsed by the Esthetics Council and Oncology Spa Solutions. Read the original media release here.

He retooled his shop to start producing protective face shields for health care workers at hospitals and other essential services.

Architectural Plastics, Inc. has gone on to make acrylic social distance guards and has seen a surge in business as companies are looking for ways to provide a safe workplace with social distancing measures. They have produced many different designs to accommodate banks, restaurants, and other stores and offices. Plastic social distancing guards are part of our present and future, and Architectural Plastics, Inc. is emerging as a strong leader in pursuit of a healthy workplace

Blake is happy about the increase in business, but he hopes the vaccines will make his guards superfluous. Blake also donates 5 percent of production to local communities, hospitals, and nursing homes. Read the original media release here.

Architectural Plastics, Inc.’s Creative Director and CEO, Blake Miremont, met for an interview with Tru Vue Museum & Conservatior, Yadin Larachette, on the Museum Community YouTube channel. Its “Take 5” series looks at applications and uses of acrylic in framing and display cases.

Blake discussed the various products that Architectural Plastics manufactures including medical instruments, product displays, furniture, museum art installations, and many other pieces made of acrylic. They work with most major museums in the San Francisco area and several ones across the country as well as corporate clients, high-end framers, and private clients.

Yadin asked about their work at the San Francisco International Airport with their extensive art collection. Blake noted the safety considerations taken when having display pieces in high traffic, public areas. Architectural Plastics made sure to include abrasion resistance on their work to avoid any injury when touching or leaning on the artwork and provided security screws as a security method to deter theft.

At the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as well as other museums, Blake and his team built display vitrines including bases and pedestals to suit the needs of the client. They typically use white and black acrylic with a glossy or matte finish because it doesn’t off-gas as a paint finish does.

Yadin stated how great it was that Blake kept his employees working through the pandemic by transitioning his output to protective face shields. This was a great way to keep his staff employed while being part of the solution with COVID-19.

This great interview highlights the masterful work that Architectural Plastics does. Watch the original media release here.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused ripples across the global supply chain. The manufacturing sector that produces vital medical supplies, such as Personal Protective Equipment, has been particularly hard hit. The last few months have seen a surge in medical supplies and PPE as numbers of those infected continue to rise. Further problems have been caused by factories seeing either closures or quarantines coupled with international trade heavily restricted.

This is why Blake Miremont has retooled his 16,000-square-foot, Petaluma-based manufacturing company, Architectural Plastics, to make personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers and first responders in their battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the last month or so, the company has grown by 30%. This growth is mostly due to the 50,000 face shields the 13 employees at Architectural Plastics, Inc. are now producing on a weekly basis.

Architectural Plastics, Inc. Focuses on Creating Safe Workspaces

Products such as face masks, hanging panels, and acrylic barriers have taken the company that Blake has spent 35 years developing to a whole new enterprise level. Some of the materials used for the hanging panels are recycled and from Germany, but most of the plastic used by Architectural Plastics is made in the United States and tested on Architectural Plastics’ own production line. Read the original media release here.

Architectural Plastics, Inc. designs and fabricates finished items, parts, displays, and now personal protective equipment for other manufacturers, businesses, and private clients.

The COVID-19 pandemic has tested people, industries, governments, and supply chains. Manufacturers and suppliers of personal protective equipment (PPE) have been working overtime to increase production in response to unprecedented international demand.

However, just as fear and anxiety have spread, so have good deeds. Companies, such as Architectural Plastics, are finding ways to give back to their communities, lending support to those who need it most during this pandemic.

Architectural Plastics, Inc. Leading by Example

Local businessman, Blake Miremont, owner of Petaluma-based factory, Architectural Plastics, recently made some drastic changes to his design fabrication facility in order to start producing face shields for health care workers and first responders.

Hearing about the lack of essential PPE gear for the people on the front lines of COVID-19 hit home as Miremont’s sister-in-law, who is a hospital administrator herself, made him aware of the shortage of face shields at her hospital.

In an attempt to lend a hand, Miremont started by ordering material for 60,000 shields. These shields are entirely plastic while still providing head size adjustability. This decision, however, was not about profitability. Around 5,000 shields have been donated to area hospitals and first responders so far with another 5,000 donations that will happen by the time production ends. Read the original media release here.

Architectural Plastics, Inc. serves a diverse set of industries by providing plastic sheet materials, large-scale production, acrylic cases, product displays, laboratory equipment, tradeshow exhibits, bespoke furniture, and now PPE gear to name a few.

In just a few months, the COVID-19 crisis has brought about years of change in the way companies in all sectors and regions do business, including Architectural Plastics. The team went from fabricating acrylic wine racks and display cases to producing plastic face shields and barriers to help fight the virus.

The company started by producing face shields, which owner, Blake Miremont, designed himself when he became aware of the lack of personal protective equipment available in hospitals. Shortly after, Blake and his team of 13 found themselves manufacturing plastic barriers for banks, restaurants, casinos, and more. Each one with a different design.

Department of Labor Encourages Establishments to Make Use of Plastic Barriers

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Department of Labor, have encouraged the use of plastic partitions in schools, businesses, and workplaces. Grocery stores, salons, restaurants, nursing homes, and even offices across the country have new found use for plastic, creating transparent barriers between groups of people as a preventative measure against the coronavirus.

While this pandemic has left many people unemployed, Blake and the team at Architectural Plastics have found themselves working 18-hour days, seven days a week to produce these face shields and barriers. Read the original media piece here.
